Our very friendly almost 2 year old cat, is an outdoor cat. He's an all white cat. We've adopted him from the shelter. He goes out almost everyday except during winter, and he always comes home except on two occasions. At one time, he was brought and kept indoor by someone a few blocks from us, and after being kept for 6 days, surrendered to the local vet.
The cat is chipped so the vet was able to locate us. The second occasion was a few days before he went missing. He didn't come home for two days, and the next time he went out....he never came back. He is popular in our street - neighbors know he's too friendly. No one had seen him since he went missing. That's almost 2 weeks now.
Last Wednesday we put posters around the neighborhood.
The next day after we put the posters up, someone who lives two streets away from us called to say she'd seen him several times during the week. She described him.
She said he would come by almost every night and eat. She also described herself as being deaf (and we think she's an elderly lady). She lives in a ground level small apartment (which I think is government housing) that has a small unfenced backyard. She said she'll try to get him for us next time our cat comes around. She also mentioned an all black cat that comes around, too. What's interesting is that there is an all-black cat in our neighborhood that we don't see anymore.
We suspect that it's possible this lady is actually holding our cat. We came by and spoke to another tenant in that complex and we found out which backyard door this lady lives. We didn't mention our suspicion - except that the lady had seen our cat and had called us.
My husband knocked at the back door of her yard (we can't get in through the front unless you're buzzed in), she didn't answer. My husband phoned her from the backyard door and we could hear the phone ringing inside (so it is definitely her place). She answered the phone and she said our cat didn't come and that now her own cat is missing, too.
What can we do, based on merely a suspicion? On one hand she could just be an innocent who wanted to help.....but on the other hand our intuition says, something just doesn't jive. She could be a hoarder. I need some advice please....
